Archaeological sites

Chacchoben
The ruins of Chacchoben ("red corn") are located at only 65 kilometers from hotel Maya Luna. The site was only recently excavated and not crowded by mass tourism. On the contrary, most of the days you will find yourself there wandering alone. The setting is gorgeous. Until now, only a part of the ruins were excavated, leaving big residential and ceremonial groupings to be discovered.

Kohunleach
Kohunlich at 180 kilometers is especially famous for its beautifull Temple of Masks. The masks recall the sun god Kinich Ahau, but were not meant as straight representations but portraits of the cities rulers.

Kohunlich is named after the cohune palm & was first reported in 1912 but only excavated in the 60s. The site was inhabited hroughout the Classic period, A.D. 250-900.

Combine a visit to the Mayan temples of Chacchoben or Kohunleach with a visit to Lake Bacalar. A perfect day trip !
