Chacchoben
The ruins of Chacchoben ("red corn") are located
at only 65 kilometers from hotel Maya Luna. The
site was only recently excavated and not crowded by mass tourism. On the contrary,
most of the days you will find yourself there wandering alone. The
setting is gorgeous. Until now, only a part
of the ruins were excavated, leaving big residential and ceremonial groupings
to be discovered.
Kohunleach
Kohunlich at 180 kilometers is especially famous for its beautifull Temple
of Masks. The masks recall the sun god Kinich Ahau, but were not meant as
straight representations but portraits of the cities rulers.
Kohunlich is named after the cohune palm & was first reported in 1912
but only excavated in the 60s. The site was inhabited hroughout the Classic
period, A.D. 250-900.
